The Kenai Peninsula Borough is over 90% wilderness and located just south of Anchorage Alaska. If it's wildlife your looking for you will find everything you've dreamed of. An abundance of Moose, Caribou, Brown and Black Bear all call the Kenai Home.
More than 200 species of Birds and Water Fowl reside within our borders. To the south and east you'll find Whales, Otters, Seals and Puffins. Kenai is world famous as the home of the largest King Salmon on the planet. The 97 pounds monster is on display at the Soldotna Visitors Center so make sure you stop in, and bring you camera. The best time to visit is May and early June or late August through October. Unless your after that World Record King Salmon that enter the Kenai River in Late June through July, during this period you'll find crowds of fishermen all in search of the illusive King.
There are four major protected wild life areas within in the borough. Chugach National Forest, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, and Kachemak State Park. The Kenai Mountains to the east hold a contiguous ice field that is larger than the state of Rhode Island, is a half-mile deep, and is reachable by hiking trails. There are more than 433 miles of improved trails to help enjoy your day hike, or backpacking trip. Four active volcanoes Mt. Spurr, Mt. Redoubt, Mt. Illiamna and St. Augustine all may be viewed from the western shore of the Kenai Peninsula.
